The Story
When You're in Love pairs opera star Grace Moore, as singer Louise Fuller, with Cary Grant as Jimmy Hudson, a stranded American artist in Mexico. To solve her visa problems, Louise pays Jimmy to marry her in a sham arrangement so she can return to the United States for a concert tour, only for the two to fall genuinely in love as the fake marriage becomes real.
Production Context
Released by Columbia Pictures in February 1937, When You're in Love was directed by Robert Riskin — better known as Frank Capra's longtime screenwriter, making his sole directorial credit here — with uncredited assistance from Harry Lachman. Songs included Moore's renditions of "Minnie the Moocher" and "Siboney," alongside originals by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields. The film built its appeal around Moore's singing voice, then used Grant's charm and comic ease to carry the romantic-comedy plotting around her musical set pieces, a template Columbia would soon replicate more successfully with Grant at the center rather than the supporting corner.
